Managing Director of Operations (New Jersey & Massachusetts) 

Location(s): This role requires significant travel between regions: at least 20% time in Boston; 20% time in Camden; 30%+ time in Newark
 
Uncommon Schools (Uncommon) Uncommon Schools is a non-profit network of 53 outstanding schools in grades K through 12 across New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. We are the largest public charter school network in the Northeast, and one of the highest performing. Our mission is to open and operate outstanding public charter schools that close the opportunity gap in low-income neighborhoods and prepare students for success in college and beyond. We are accomplishing that mission today.
 
TEAM & ROLE OVERVIEW
The Managing Director of Operations (MDO) will be responsible for ensuring high-quality school operations in the regions that they manage. With their team of Associate Chief Operating Officers (ACOOs), the MDO will ensure that all schools are running efficiently and effectively, oversee regional budgets, be responsible for the sound implementation of policies and procedures, and drive and steward the region’s leadership team. The MDO will work closely with leaders in their regions, including Assistant Superintendents who oversee instruction, and the Regional Senior Directors who oversee all external-facing initiatives and relationships. The MDO will report to the Chief of Operations.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking a strategic operational leader who will set a high bar for school operations and will achieve that vision of excellence by managing and building relationships with others. The MDO must be able to strategically prioritize issues within their region and work to implement sustainable, long-term solutions to these issues. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
 
Regional Leadership
  • Steward each region’s leadership team (ASups and ACOOs) towards a common vision for the performance and culture of schools and school leaders within that region.
  • Facilitate monthly regional leadership team meetings and drive decision-making.
  • Oversee financial management for the regions; maintain oversight of school and all-in regional budgets, and implement systems to maintain financial sustainability.
  • Refine, implement, and monitor regional policies, procedures, and initiatives (e.g. teacher certification; facilities; ES/MS and MS/HS matriculation).
 
School Operations Management
  • Effectively support and develop ACOOs in their management of school-based Directors of Operations to ensure outstanding school operations.
  • Hold ACOOs and DOOs accountable to cross-Uncommon performance metrics, and support ACOOs in improving DOO progress to goals (Operations Dashboard, Operations Inspections, Mid-Year Evaluations, etc.).
  • Create, implement, and monitor cross-Uncommon operations initiatives in their regions (e.g. aligned toolkits for State Testing and School Launch; PD session facilitation and follow-up).
  • Build and steward a leadership culture for DOO teams within regions.
 
Collaboration & Team Management
  • Partner with CO and MDO for other regions to ensure consistent implementation of operations priorities.
  • Work seamlessly with ASups, ACOOs, RSD and other regional leaders to move regions forward and proactively identify issues.
  • Work closely with Home Office teams to identify regional needs and implement sustainable solutions.
  • Serve as an exceptional role model as a leader and manager, investing deeply in supporting and developing team members and growing their capacity to learn, contribute and engage in the work of the team and organization.
  • Establish individual staff goals that contribute to organizational objectives.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
 
Preferred
  • Significant experience in school operations leadership and management.
  • Demonstrates a high bar for excellence and able to execute effectively on the vision for excellence in schools and regions.
  • Able to effectively manage team members to concrete outcomes.
  • Excellent communication, relationship- and coalition-building skills and ability to communicate with and influence varied audiences (e.g. school leaders, regional leaders, Home Office teams, Uncommon parents).
  • Able to effectively prioritize between multiple high-leverage, high-risk issues; impeccable judgment and understanding of the implications of decisions on schools and stakeholders.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, high-change organization; flexible.
  • Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills; ability to demonstrate an appropriate sense of urgency.
 
Minimum
  • At least 5 years of experience working in operations
  • At least 3 years of experience in school or non-profit operations more specifically, including extensive experience managing a team to outcomes.
  • Strong commitment to the organizational mission.
  • A bachelor’s degree.
