North Star Academy- Washington Park, Newark, NJ
North Star Academy Charter School of Newark is one of New Jersey's very first charter public schools and has also become one of its most celebrated. North Star was hailed by President George W. Bush during his visit as "a jewel of excellence," and the Class of 2004 (100% college matriculation) was touted by the New York Times as a harbinger of New Jersey public education reform. The school and its programs have been featured in a PBS Documentary ("Charter Schools that Work"), Time Magazine ("A Real School of Rock"), and in the book No Excuses: Closing the Racial Gap in Learning. The school currently serves students in grades K-12 across several campuses.
Uncommon Schools, Inc. (Uncommon) is a nonprofit organization that starts and manages high-performing urban college preparatory charter schools. To accomplish this, Uncommon builds tight networks of philosophically aligned schools in close geographic proximity to one another so that principals and teachers can collaborate, benefit from common services, and focus on the urgent tasks of closing the racial academic achievement gap and preparing low-income students to succeed at the highest levels in college and beyond. The College Access & Success Office Coordinator is responsible for excellent educational programming and support that achieves the North Star mission of preparing its students for success at competitive four-year colleges and universities.
