The Opportunity
Uncommon Schools starts and manages outstanding urban charter public schools that close the achievement gap and prepare low-income students to graduate from college. Uncommon is a non-profit network of 52 public charter schools in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Uncommon operates in six regions: Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, Rochester, and Troy, with over 18,000 students, 2,200 staff and more than 100 school leaders.
In all regions, Uncommon Schools are outperforming their district counterparts; 82% of Uncommon’s high school graduates – the vast majority of whom are economically disadvantaged – have graduated or are on pace to graduate from college, a rate higher than the 12% four-year college graduation rate among the most economically disadvantaged students nationwide.
The Director of Strategic Initiatives will drive governance, strategy, and special projects for Uncommon’s largest region.  Uncommon NYC will manage 24 schools serving over 8,700 students in the 2018-19 school year.
The Director of Strategic Initiatives will play an integral role in the development and implementation of regional priorities.  This role will report to the Senior Advisor to the COO and will lead projects including but not limited to:
  • Manage the NYC Board of Trustees
  • Drive regional policy and annual charter renewals
  • Negotiate for public space to support school growth
  • Oversee performance management and data for school operations
  • Lead annual strategic planning process
  • Manage regional team budget
  • Lead special projects that address regional opportunities and areas for growth
  • Manage Senior Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives
  • 4-8 years of experience in management consulting or related field
  • Exceptional strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent project management, implementation skills and attention to detail
  • Strong manager with ability to build relationships with various stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to take initiative, manage competing priorities, and work independently
  • Enjoys working in a fast paced environment
  • Flexibility, comfort with ambiguity, and a sense of humor in the face of competing demands
  • Excellent skills in data analysis and Microsoft Office (particularly PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Prior experience in education and/or alignment with Uncommon’s mission
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
