Director of Financial Management
Reports to: Senior Director of Financial Management

The Director of Financial Management is responsible for oversight of the financial health and strategy of a significant portion of Uncommon Schools’ regions and for Uncommon Schools, Inc. and its affiliates.  He/she will manage and help build a high performing team.  In collaboration with the Senior Director and the co- Director of Financial Management, the Director will set the strategic initiatives for the team and supports the establishment of a long-term vision for how the team will maintain high quality service at scale. The Director will also support real estate transactions and interacts with the leadership team to analyze and synthesize complex issues and make concrete recommendations.

  • Ensures financial health and effective budget management of the school regions and/or Uncommon affiliates he/she oversees
  • Manages a team of at least 2 direct reports.  The team managed by the Director is expected to grow significantly over the year to at least 3-4 direct reports.
  • Oversees large-scale team initiatives; for example, oversees the implementation of an online budget system to replace current excel-based systems
  • Works with other teams to improve and build systems to support long term scalability (e.g., supports improvement of processes between Finance and Development)
  • Collaborates with Senior Director and co-Director of Financial Management on team strategic planning, building a strong team and maintaining high quality work.
  • Supports real estate financings, ensuring that transactions are sustainable and outlines the impact of transactions on financial statements.
  • Supports the Chief Financial Officer with financial strategy for the organization, as needed.
  • Work with the Accounting team to support accurate and timely financial statements prepared in accordance with GAAP.

Reports to Senior Director of Financial Management. Works closely with co-Director of Financial Management, senior leadership of Uncommon school regions (i.e. ACOOs, COO), the Development and Accounting teams. 

  • Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
    • Advanced financial strategy and planning skills.
    • Significant experience in financial reporting, financial analysis and cash flow management.
    • An obsessive attention to detail and follow-through.
    • Strong problem-analysis and problem-solving abilities.
    • Solid communication and negotiation skills.
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
    • Interest and ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders
    • Interest in building systems and processes; ability to deal with ambiguous situations
  • Minimum educational level:
    • Bachelor’s Degree; CPA/CFA/Masters in Education or Public Policy/MBA preferred.
  • Experience required:
    • Prior experience managing at least 1 direct report
    • Minimum of 5 years of finance related experience
    • Experience in K-12 public education a plus.
