Uncommon Schools starts and manages outstanding urban charter public schools that close the achievement gap and prepare low-income students to graduate from college. Uncommon is a non-profit network of 52 public charter schools in New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts. Uncommon operates in six regions: Boston, Camden, New York City, Newark, Rochester, and Troy, with over 18,000 students, over 2,200 staff and more than 100 school leaders.
 
In all regions, Uncommon’s schools are outperforming their district counterparts. 82% of Uncommon’s high school graduates – the vast majority of whom are economically disadvantaged – have graduated or are on pace to graduate from college, a rate higher than the 12%, four-year college graduation rate among the most economically disadvantaged students nationwide.
 
GENERAL SUMMARY:
The Senior Associate Director of Accounting is the team leader responsible for the day to day accounting of the growing network of 13 North Star Academy (NSA) schools. Initial responsibilities include managing payroll and accounts payable.  However, the role will expand and transition to full responsibility for all of NSA’s day to day accounting responsibilities which including general ledger accounting, preparing monthly financial statements, audit support, training, project management and more.

S/He should have a growth mindset, be a strong manager, detail oriented and a hands-on, hardworking team player.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Payroll
  • Oversee all aspects of current and future payroll processing and provide comprehensive quality control to achieve on time, error free payrolls.
  • Collaborate with the HR to implement and satisfy the requirements of NJ pension processing (TPAF, PERS, DCRP)
  • Utilize ADP reporting tools to analyze and provide payroll data
  • Collaborate with the Finance team to manage Federal Grant tagging.
  • Manage Quarter End and Year End Payroll processing
  • Identify ways to improve payroll processes including the effective project implementation of the ADP Time and Attendance.
Accounts Payable
  • Collaborate with the Operational Management at the NSA schools to effectively manage all aspects of the Accounts Payable
  • Provide exceptional support for the Operational Staff at the schools
  • Manage vendor additions, changes and annual 1099 reporting
  • Conduct Accounts Payable review and cleanup including encumbrances
  • Continuously improve systems to ensure timely, compliant and accurate payments
  • Manage banking relationships
General Ledger
  • Responsible for Accounts Receivable, Cash Receipts, Cash Disbursements, General Ledger
  • Manage budget update process and support the Finance team as needed
  • Provide monthly Board and School Reporting including balance sheets, profit/loss statements and other NJ required
  • Utilize standard and custom reporting to analyze and respond to GL data requests
  • Review Bank Reconciliations, follow-up on unusual items and manage suspense
  • Prepare Year end closing journal entries
  • Prepare for and support the annual audit
Accounting Team Support and Management
  • Enforces and maintains our fiscal policies and procedures
  • Develop and conduct training for Operational Staff (Office Managers, Directors of Operations, Fellows)
  • Manage End of Year and Start of Year tasks (including New School setup)
  • Conducts research required for strategic team initiatives, special projects, and other special requests for accounting information

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to Senior Associate Director of Accounting and works closely with the entire Accounting and Financial Management teams; interacts with all Home Office personnel and school-based teams.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
  • Expertise in payroll processing (ADP Workforce Now a plus)
  • Experience with accounting software programs. (Abila MIP Accounting a plus; willing to train)
  • Experience in Fund accounting for a multi-site organization preferred but not required
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook
  • Strong organization skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience managing staff
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
  • Displays maturity and ability to work well in a team as well as work autonomously
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment; Eager to learn and receive feedback
  • Interest in and aptitude for building and documenting systems and processes for efficiency
Educational background:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required
Experience:
  • Minimum 4+ years of experience in non-profit development, accounting, or public-sector finance preferred.
  • Experience in New Jersey K-12 public education preferred.
