Director of Strategy and Operations

Uncommon Schools (Uncommon) is seeking a Director of Strategy and Operations to manage the strategic direction and overall operations of the organization’s K-8 Curriculum and Assessment Team (CAT).  The Director of Strategy and Operations will be responsible for all activities around the operations, cross-regional coordination, and communications related to curriculum and assessments as well as executing the strategic vision of the Curriculum and Assessment Team through the following responsibilities:

Manage Operations
  • Oversee and manage the curriculum and IA gathering, maintenance, revision, distribution, and feedback loop
  • Liaise and serve as the point person for regions for CAT operations
  • Coordinate, communicate, and drive process implementation with regions
  • Manage the shared server for curriculum and instruction
  • Serve as the liaison with Product Solutions/Data Analysis/Technology teams for CAT
  • Manage assessment revisions work cycles for ES and MS assessment rounds
  • Manage the calendar for CAT responsibilities such as  curriculum distribution, IA cycles, audits, professional development, and curriculum roll-out meetings,
  • Facilitate network analysis completion and distribution

Plan Management and Execution
  • Lead yearly strategic planning process and manage execution
  • Plan and participate in monthly CAT meetings
  • Manage several specific strategic initiatives each year, revised annually
  • Be proactive around CAT’s priorities by staying ahead of and circling back on short-, medium-, and long-term priorities and needs
  • Create and maintain team project plans and initiatives such as curriculum reviews, summer curriculum tasks, DCI evaluation process
  • Manage and support new instructional curriculum pilots from inception to full implementation
  • Manage and support the DCI annual hiring process

Build Organizational Relationships
  • Visit schools to build relationships with school leadership and teachers and assess the effectiveness of CAT initiatives
  • Participate in school inspections and content walkthroughs
  • Attend AMD, ACOO, principal, and/or DOO meetings to present CAT initiatives and gather feedback
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

  • Report to the Director of Curriculum and Assessment, K-8, and working closely with the Chief of Staff to the Chief Schools Officer, K-8,
  • Work with regional operational teams, school leadership teams, Assistant Superintendents (ASups), Associate Chief Operating Officers (ACOOs), regional and network lesson planners, Deans of Curriculum and Instruction (DCIs), and other members of the Curriculum and Assessment Team.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to project manage
  • Exceptional strategic, analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Experience in building new systems, structures, and processes
  • Ability to drive multiple processes, communicate clearly to involved stakeholders, and drive to complete tasks
  • Ability to multi-task, set and drive priorities, monitor progress towards goals, and utilize data and information
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to speak and write clearly and to differentiate messaging to a variety of stakeholders
  • Strong leadership and people management experience
  • Comfortable with ambiguity and desire to shape a new team
  • Self-directed and able to contribute individually and as a member of a team
  • Interest in education/charter schools a plus
  • Willing to travel to our schools throughout our six regions
  • Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree preferred (but not necessary)
  • 5-8 years of work experience managing strategic planning, operations and communications in a fast-paced environment with a sense of urgency, clarity, and top-of-the-line customer service.
