Rochester Prep High School is fortunate to have an established partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology.  One successful aspect of the RIT Partnership has been the development of a Design elective pathway that fulfills the art requirement and culminates in students completing AP 2D Design. As Rochester Prep enrollment is expected to grow over the next few years, there is now an opportunity to offer an additional set of elective courses.  We have decided to focus on robotics/engineering to take advantage of RIT’s tremendous expertise in this area and to provide Rochester Prep students with additional opportunities for hands-on project work. Ultimately, the goal is to create a pathway that will prepare RPHS students to be competitive in elite undergraduate engineering programs. 

The purpose of the Robotics/Engineering Curriculum Designer position is to lead the design of the new elective classes in collaboration with RIT and other Uncommon Schools teammates.


  • Research best practices and present case studies to the broader working group in order to inform the program’s development
  • Evaluate whether pre-existing programs may serve as a foundation for the course design 
  • Facilitate benchmarking visits for the core team to select high schools who have similar programs
  • Recognize the interdependency between the new elective course, the existing STEM curriculum at RPHS, and relevant after school clubs. Make recommendations on how to best design and integrate the new elective into the fabric of Rochester Prep so that it builds upon and enhances other coursework.
  • Gather input from RIT faculty on how to best leverage the robotics and engineering expertise at RIT with Rochester Prep scholars.
  • Craft the robotics/engineering curriculum for each course in the elective track including:  Final & Quarterly Assessments, Scope and Sequences, Unit Plans, and Daily Lesson plans/materials.

This position will report to Rochester Prep’s Assistant Superintendent during the 2017-18 school year.  The Robotics/Engineering Curriculum Designer will also collaborate closely with Rochester Prep’s Director of Strategic Initiatives to engage RIT partners in this work. 
This is a position for the 2017-18 school year, and therefore a one-year position.  However, with the adoption of the robotics/engineering elective track, we anticipate that there will be full time teaching opportunities available in future years.

  • Passion for hands-on, “tinkering” projects that bring robotics and engineering concepts to life for students
  • Experience developing a new curriculum and writing effective lesson plans
  • Skilled at systems thinking:  the ability to see the “big picture” and understand how all system elements interact and contribute to achieving the stated goal
  • Ability to research best practices and implement them
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and take initiative
  • Exceptional problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent organization, time management, and follow-up skills; high sense of urgency
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to present effectively to diverse audiences
  • Professional demeanor with the ability to facilitate decision-making amongst multiple parties

  • Bachelor’s degree required
